The current craze is the greeting (for example in a cafe or bar by the staff) "Hi GUYS, what can I get you?" etc
So I have a question. If addressing a group of people, regardless of the sex or gender identity of all of the group, as "guys" is considered "gender generic," let's start addressing a group of people, regardless of the sex or gender identity of all of the group as "hi GIRLS, what can I get you?"

i do this often (along with just "hi, how are you?" or "hello people" if the customers look friendly enough). i make a point of never saying "hello ladies" or "hi fellas" or "hey girls" or "hi boys", because i think that "guys" kinda is gender neutral. or at least as gender neutral as you can get.
i can't stand it when i'm out with people and we get "girls" or "ladies" because i'm not a child or a "lady", and neither are my friends. *is a bitter little transboy*
i know that there is an argument against "guys" - my teacher in grade four (i think) made a point of not letting us use it generically (which just ended up making the class more gender segregated, imo) - but i'll keep doing it. because i'm ev0l! sorry!
I tend to use "hi people" or (more rarely) "hi folks". To me, guys is a term for males.
